Stimulant detox in Woodstock & Hiram, GA
Cocaine, meth, Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse. Different drugs, one shared problem — withdrawal that is psychologically brutal and physically unremarkable. Our outpatient stimulant detox program is built around that.

A stimulant detox program is supervised withdrawal from cocaine, methamphetamine, or prescription stimulants. Unlike alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal it is not physically dangerous, but it produces a severe crash of fatigue, depressed mood and anhedonia that typically lasts one to two weeks with lingering effects for one to three months.
Why supervision matters
Why stimulant detox gets underestimated
Because there is no seizure risk and no dramatic physical syndrome, stimulant withdrawal is often treated as though it barely needs treatment. That reasoning has the risk profile right and the outcomes badly wrong.
What stimulant withdrawal produces is a collapse in dopamine signalling. The result is exhaustion, sleep that does not restore, an inability to feel pleasure in anything, and cravings that intensify rather than fade over the first two weeks. Depressed mood during this phase can be severe enough to need monitoring in its own right.
Relapse rates in the first month are high, and the reason is almost never physical discomfort. It is that everything feels gray and going back is the fastest way to make it stop.
Withdrawal timeline
Stimulant withdrawal timeline
Broadly consistent across stimulants, though methamphetamine tends to produce a longer course than cocaine.
| Stage | When | What typically happens |
|---|---|---|
| Crash | Hours 6–48 | Abrupt exhaustion, increased appetite, irritability, low mood. |
| Acute | Days 1–7 | Heavy fatigue, excessive sleep, flat affect, intensifying cravings. |
| Extended | Weeks 1–4 | Anhedonia, poor concentration, disturbed sleep. Highest relapse period. |
| Recovery | Weeks 4–12 | Mood and energy gradually normalize as dopamine regulation recovers. |
| Meth specifically | Longer | Methamphetamine withdrawal commonly runs longer than cocaine, with more persistent cognitive effects. |

Medications
How we treat stimulant withdrawal
No approved substitution medication exists for stimulant withdrawal. What works is structure and symptom management. Depressed mood during stimulant withdrawal can need active treatment — see dual diagnosis care.
- Sleep restoration — the single highest-leverage intervention — almost everything else improves once sleep regulates
- Mood monitoring — depressed mood during stimulant withdrawal can become clinically significant and needs active watching
- Nutritional support — appetite rebounds hard after suppression; eating patterns need attention
- Structured check-ins through weeks two to four — the hardest phase arrives after the physical symptoms are gone, which is exactly when most programs stop
- Craving management and relapse prevention — started during detox rather than after, because week two is when it matters

By substance
Stimulant detox by drug
The shape is similar; the specifics differ. Detailed pages:
When you need more than outpatient
Stimulant-induced psychosis, severe depression during withdrawal, a history of significant mood episodes, or an unsafe home environment all warrant inpatient care. Combined stimulant and opioid or benzodiazepine dependence also changes the picture and is assessed individually.
Mood is monitored throughout. If it deteriorates in a way that concerns us, we will tell you directly and help you get the right support.

Most major plans
Coverage for outpatient detox is generally stronger than people assume. See insurance for detox.
Outpatient costs less
Without room and board, outpatient detox is typically a fraction of an inpatient stay for the same clinical supervision.
Common questions
Stimulant detox, answered
Is stimulant withdrawal dangerous?
Not physically, in the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be — there is no seizure risk. The significant risks are psychiatric: severe depressed mood, and in some cases stimulant-induced psychosis.
How long does stimulant withdrawal last?
The acute crash runs roughly one to two weeks. Anhedonia, poor concentration and disturbed sleep commonly persist for one to three months as dopamine regulation recovers. Methamphetamine tends toward the longer end.
Is there a medication for stimulant withdrawal?
There is no approved substitution medication equivalent to buprenorphine for opioids. Treatment targets the symptoms that actually appear — sleep, mood, appetite — alongside structured support through the highest-risk weeks.
Why do people relapse in week two?
Because that is when the physical symptoms have gone and the psychological ones are at their worst. Fatigue and anhedonia peak after most people expect to feel better, which is precisely why support needs to extend past the first week.
Is meth withdrawal different from cocaine withdrawal?
Same overall shape, different duration. Methamphetamine withdrawal generally runs longer with more persistent cognitive and mood effects, partly because meth stays in the system considerably longer than cocaine.
What does your stimulant detox program involve?
Assessment, then scheduled outpatient visits through the crash and the weeks after it — sleep and mood monitoring, nutritional support, craving management, and a step-down plan built before you finish. The program runs around your work rather than replacing it, with appointments to 7:00 PM.
Can I keep working through stimulant detox?
The first few days of the crash are usually not workable. After that many people can, though concentration stays impaired for some weeks. Appointments run to 7:00 PM on weekdays and open Saturday and Sunday mornings.
