Marijuana detox is supervised withdrawal from cannabis dependence. Symptoms typically begin within 24 to 72 hours of stopping, peak around days two to six, and largely resolve within two to three weeks. Common symptoms include irritability, insomnia, vivid dreams, appetite loss, anxiety and sweating. It does not carry the seizure risk alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal does.
The credibility problem
“You cannot get withdrawal from weed”
People stopping heavy daily cannabis use are routinely told the symptoms are imaginary — by friends, online, occasionally by clinicians. That is not what the evidence says. Cannabis withdrawal is a recognized syndrome with a documented course.
What has also changed is the drug. THC content in commercially available cannabis is substantially higher than it was twenty years ago, and concentrates higher again. Dependence develops more readily at those potencies, and the withdrawal that follows is correspondingly more noticeable.
If you have been smoking daily for years and stopping produces three nights without sleep, sweating and an irritability that is hard on the people around you, that is not you being dramatic. It is a known clinical picture.
Timeline
Cannabis withdrawal timeline
THC is fat-soluble and clears slowly, which shapes the course.
| Stage | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Onset | 24–72 hours | Irritability, restlessness, appetite loss, sleep disruption begins. |
| Peak | Days 2–6 | Insomnia, vivid or disturbing dreams, anxiety, sweating, low mood. |
| Easing | Days 7–14 | Appetite returns. Mood improving. Sleep still poor. |
| Resolution | Weeks 2–3 | Most symptoms resolved. Sleep is usually the last to settle. |

The symptom that decides it
Sleep is why people go back
Ask anyone who has stopped heavy daily cannabis what the hard part was and the answer is almost always sleep.
Cannabis suppresses REM sleep. When you stop, REM rebounds — which produces the vivid, intense and often unpleasant dreams people report, on top of difficulty falling asleep at all. A week of that is genuinely difficult, and a great many people resume specifically to sleep rather than for any other effect.
It resolves. It takes longer than the other symptoms, commonly two to three weeks, and knowing that in advance changes how people handle it. Non-habit-forming sleep support through that window is the single most useful intervention we offer for cannabis.
Treatment
How we manage cannabis withdrawal
- Sleep support — non-habit-forming, through the REM rebound window that decides most attempts
- Symptom monitoring — irritability, anxiety and appetite tracked across visits
- Anxiety management — frequently what the cannabis was doing work for. See dual diagnosis
- Assessment for cannabis-induced symptoms — high-potency products are associated with anxiety, panic and occasionally psychotic symptoms
- Relapse planning — the two-week mark is where most attempts fail, and it is planned for rather than hoped through
Cannabis and synthetic cannabinoids are not the same problem
Spice and K2 are sold as synthetic marijuana, and the name does real harm. THC is a partial agonist at cannabinoid receptors; most synthetic cannabinoids are full agonists and far more potent. Their withdrawal can involve severe agitation, vomiting and psychosis — none of which is typical of cannabis.
If what you have been using came in a packet from a shop rather than as cannabis, see spice detox. It is a different clinical picture.

Common questions
Marijuana detox, answered
Is marijuana withdrawal real?
Yes. Cannabis withdrawal is a recognized clinical syndrome. Irritability, sleep disturbance, appetite loss, anxiety, sweating and vivid dreams are all well documented after heavy daily use stops.
How long does marijuana withdrawal last?
Symptoms typically begin within 24 to 72 hours, peak around days two to six, and largely resolve within two to three weeks. Sleep disturbance often outlasts everything else.
Is cannabis withdrawal dangerous?
Not medically. There is no seizure risk. It is genuinely uncomfortable, and the sleep disruption in particular is severe enough that many people resume simply to sleep.
Why is quitting harder now than it used to be?
Potency. THC content in commercially available cannabis is far higher than it was two decades ago, and concentrates higher still. Dependence develops more readily at those levels.
How long does THC stay in your system?
Longer than almost anything else — 7 to 30 days in urine for regular users, because THC is fat-soluble and stores in tissue. Occasional use clears far faster.
Do I need a detox program for cannabis?
Many people stop without one. Clinical support helps where sleep disruption is severe, where anxiety underneath the use needs addressing, or where previous attempts have failed at the two-week mark.
What about cannabis-induced anxiety or psychosis?
High-potency products are associated with anxiety, panic and in some cases psychotic symptoms. If you have experienced any of those, mention it — it changes the assessment.
Is spice the same thing?
No, and the difference is significant. Synthetic cannabinoids act very differently and their withdrawal can be medically serious. See spice detox.
Can I keep working?
Almost always. Cannabis withdrawal is uncomfortable rather than incapacitating. The main issue is a week or two of poor sleep.
What if I use cannabis for a medical reason?
Say so at assessment. Dependence can develop on medical use as readily as recreational, and what the cannabis was managing needs a plan of its own.
