Cigna administers substance use and mental health benefits through Evernorth Behavioral Health. It is the same company, but a different administrative track with its own network and its own authorization process.
Members who call general member services asking about detox coverage are frequently transferred, sometimes more than once, and occasionally given medical-benefit answers that do not apply to behavioral health. It is a common source of people being told something is not covered when it is.

Evernorth assesses withdrawal management against clinical criteria similar to the ASAM framework: how severe the withdrawal risk is, what else is going on medically, and whether an outpatient setting can safely manage it.
Prior authorization is standard. For longer tapers — benzodiazepines, or a Suboxone or methadone reduction — expect a continued-stay review partway through, where updated clinical information supports extending the authorization. Routine, not a warning sign.
