How long does ketamine stay in your system?
Short answer: ketamine itself clears in hours, its metabolite lingers for days, and standard drug tests do not look for either. The longer answer depends heavily on how much and how often.

Ketamine has a half-life of roughly two to three hours, so the drug itself clears quickly. Its metabolite norketamine persists longer and is what most testing detects. Typical urine detection is one to three days after occasional use, extending to around two weeks after heavy or prolonged use. Standard 5-panel, 10-panel and DOT drug tests do not screen for ketamine at all.
By test type
Ketamine detection windows
These are typical ranges rather than guarantees. Heavy or daily use pushes every window longer.
| Test | Screens for ketamine? | Typical detection window |
|---|---|---|
| Urine | Only with a ketamine-specific test | 1–3 days occasional; up to ~14 days heavy use |
| Blood | Only if specifically tested | ~24 hours; up to 3 days after heavy use |
| Saliva | Only if specifically tested | ~24 hours |
| Hair follicle | Only if specifically tested | Potentially ~90 days; rarely screened |
| Standard 5-panel | No | Not screened |
| Standard 10-panel | No | Not screened |
| DOT panel | No | Not screened |
Why the two numbers differ
Ketamine clears fast — norketamine does not
People get confused because two different things are being measured.
Ketamine itself has a half-life of about two to three hours. That is why the effects are short and why it works as an anesthetic. By the next morning very little parent drug remains.
Norketamine is what the liver turns it into, and it hangs around considerably longer. Most testing looks for norketamine rather than ketamine, which is why detection windows are measured in days rather than hours.
With heavy or daily use, norketamine accumulates faster than the body clears it. That is the reason someone using several times a week can test positive far longer than the standard figures suggest — and it is also why ketamine withdrawal lasts longer than the drug's short duration would imply.
What changes it
Factors that extend detection
Dose and frequency
By far the biggest factor. Daily use accumulates norketamine faster than the body clears it.
Liver function
Ketamine is metabolized hepatically. Impaired liver function slows clearance meaningfully.
Body composition
Ketamine is lipophilic and distributes into fatty tissue, which slows elimination.
Hydration
Affects urine concentration and therefore test sensitivity, though not how much is actually in your body.
Route
Intravenous and intramuscular use produce different absorption curves from intranasal or oral.
Age and metabolism
Clearance generally slows with age and varies substantially between individuals.
For prescribed patients
If you are receiving ketamine treatment for depression
Ketamine and esketamine are prescribed for treatment-resistant depression, increasingly through at-home and telehealth programs. A reasonable question is whether that shows up.
On standard employment panels, no — they do not screen for ketamine. If a ketamine-specific test is run, prescribed ketamine is chemically the same substance and would be detected. In that situation the relevant step is disclosing your prescription to the medical review officer, not to your employer directly.
A separate and more important question: if your use has moved beyond what was prescribed, that is a recognized clinical situation rather than a personal failing, and it is more common than people assume. See ketamine detox.
The question underneath the question
Most people searching this are not idly curious. There is a test coming, or a job, or a custody matter, and the real calculation is how long you would need to stop.
If you have already tried and found you could not — or found that stopping brought exhaustion, cravings and a flatness that did not lift after a few days — that is not a willpower problem. Ketamine dependence is overwhelmingly psychological, which makes it harder to stop than substances with a dramatic physical withdrawal, not easier.
And if you have been using heavily for a long time, there is a more urgent thing to check than a drug test: urinary symptoms. Urgency, frequency, pain or blood in the urine points to ketamine-induced bladder damage, which is the most serious consequence of chronic use and which improves if use stops early enough.
Getting help
If stopping is harder than the test question suggested
Ketamine detox is not physically dangerous, which is exactly why it gets underestimated. The crash, the cravings and the bladder damage are the real issues, and all three are treatable.
Common questions
Ketamine detection, answered
How long does ketamine stay in your system?
Ketamine itself clears quickly — its half-life is roughly two to three hours — but its metabolite norketamine persists longer. In urine, detection is typically one to three days for occasional use and up to around two weeks after heavy or prolonged use. Blood and saliva windows are around 24 hours.
Does ketamine show up on a drug test?
Not on standard panels. The common 5-panel and 10-panel screens and the federal DOT panel do not include ketamine. Detecting it requires a test that specifically looks for ketamine or norketamine, which is used in some clinical, forensic and treatment settings.
How long does ketamine stay in urine?
Roughly one to three days after occasional use. Heavy or daily use extends this considerably, with detection reported up to around two weeks in some cases, because norketamine accumulates.
How long does ketamine stay in your blood?
Generally around 24 hours, sometimes up to three days after heavy use. Blood testing has a short window and is used mainly in clinical or forensic settings rather than employment screening.
Does ketamine show up on a hair follicle test?
Only if the panel specifically screens for it, which standard hair tests do not. Where a ketamine-specific hair test is used, the window is much longer — potentially around 90 days.
Can ketamine cause a false positive for PCP?
It has occasionally been reported, since both are dissociatives and some older immunoassays are less specific. Modern testing usually distinguishes them, and confirmatory mass spectrometry resolves any ambiguity.
I get ketamine treatment for depression. Will it show on a test?
Prescribed ketamine and esketamine are the same substances a ketamine-specific test detects. Standard employment panels do not screen for them. If a specific test is being run, a valid prescription is the relevant fact — disclose it to the medical review officer rather than to your employer.
Does the DOT test for ketamine?
No. The federal DOT panel covers marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and PCP. Ketamine is not included. Employers may run separate non-DOT panels of their own specification.
What affects how long ketamine stays in your system?
Dose and frequency most of all, then metabolism, body composition, hydration, liver function and age. Heavy regular use extends detection well beyond what occasional use would produce.
If I am worried about a test, should I stop?
Worth asking what happens when you try. If stopping brings cravings, low mood, exhaustion and disrupted sleep that do not lift, that is dependence rather than a testing problem — and it is treatable.
