Dual diagnosis treatment addresses substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition together. At Restoration it requires a primary substance use diagnosis, and is delivered alongside outpatient detox by a psychiatric nurse practitioner with oversight from a board-certified psychiatrist. Where mental health is the primary concern, we refer to a more appropriate provider.

Restoration is a licensed substance use treatment provider, Georgia DRUG001419. Dual diagnosis care here means treating psychiatric symptoms alongside a substance use disorder that is the primary diagnosis. If your main difficulty is depression, bipolar disorder or an anxiety disorder and substance use is secondary, we are not the right setting — and we will say so and help you find one that is.
What we are well set up for is the very common situation where somebody has been drinking or using for years to manage anxiety, depression or trauma symptoms, and both now need addressing at once.
Why it matters
Treating one and not the other rarely holds
The usual sequence looks like this. Someone completes detox, feels physically better, and goes home. The anxiety that was being managed with alcohol is still there, now without the thing that was managing it. Within weeks they are drinking again, and they conclude detox does not work for them.
What did not work was addressing half the problem.

A psychiatrist running a detox program is not the default
Most detox facilities are medically directed by a physician with no psychiatric training. Adequate for managing withdrawal in isolation — and withdrawal is rarely in isolation. Ours is board certified in adult and forensic psychiatry, with a psychiatric nurse practitioner prescribing daily.

What is dual diagnosis treatment?
Treating a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health condition together rather than sequentially. Treating one and ignoring the other tends to produce relapse in whichever was left alone.
Do I qualify for dual diagnosis treatment here?
If substance use is your primary diagnosis and you also experience depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms or another mental health condition, yes. Where mental health is the primary concern and substance use secondary, we refer you to a provider better suited to that.
Why does the primary diagnosis matter?
It determines the right setting. We are a licensed substance use provider with psychiatric expertise on staff — correct for someone whose main problem is substances and who also has psychiatric symptoms. Not correct for someone whose main problem is a psychiatric condition.
Which conditions do you see most often?
Depression, generalised anxiety, PTSD and trauma histories, and ADHD. The usual pattern is that the psychiatric condition came first and substance use started as a way to manage it.
Will you take away my psychiatric medication?
No. Existing prescriptions are reviewed at assessment and coordinating with your prescriber is usually part of the plan. Stopping psychiatric medication during detox is rarely a good idea.
Can you treat depression that started after I stopped using?
Yes. Depression during and after withdrawal is common — markedly so with stimulants and ketamine — which is why mood is monitored rather than waited out.
Is dual diagnosis treatment more expensive?
Not usually as a separate charge. It is delivered within your detox care rather than as an add-on. The benefits check tells you what your plan covers.
What if I have been told I am not sick enough for mental health treatment?
That happens often, particularly to people whose substance use has dominated the clinical picture. A psychiatric assessment here is part of intake rather than something you have to qualify for separately.
