Ketamine withdrawal is predominantly psychological. Expect intense cravings, low mood, anxiety, irritability, exhaustion and disrupted sleep, with milder physical symptoms including tremors, sweating and appetite loss. It does not carry the seizure risk alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal does, though mood and bladder symptoms still need clinical attention. Acute symptoms usually settle within seven to ten days; cravings and low mood commonly persist for several weeks.

Hour by hour

The ketamine withdrawal timeline

Onset is quick because ketamine clears the body fast. Duration depends on how long and how heavily you have been using.

StageWhenWhat happens
First 24 hours0–24 hrsCravings begin, fatigue sets in, mood drops. Sleep is usually disrupted from the first night.
PeakDays 1–3Heaviest phase. Exhaustion, anhedonia, irritability, anxiety. Tremors and sweating in some people.
AcuteDays 3–7Physical symptoms ease. Appetite begins returning. Mood remains low and cravings stay strong.
ResolutionDays 7–14Acute withdrawal largely over. Sleep starts normalizing.
ExtendedWeeks 2–6Anhedonia, poor concentration and cravings persist. Highest relapse risk sits here.
Late recoveryWeeks 6–12+Mood, memory and concentration continue improving. Urinary symptoms often improve if use has stopped.

Symptoms

What people actually report

Psychological

Intense cravings, depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, and an inability to take pleasure in anything. The dominant feature of ketamine withdrawal.

Cognitive

Short-term memory problems, poor concentration, mental fog. Often worse in the weeks immediately after stopping, then improving over months.

Physical

Fatigue, tremors, sweating, chills, raised heart rate, appetite loss, nausea. Real but comparatively mild.

Sleep

Insomnia, vivid or disturbing dreams, unrefreshing sleep. Frequently the most persistent complaint.

Urinary

Urgency, frequency, pain on urination, sometimes blood. From ketamine-induced uropathy — a consequence of use rather than of withdrawal, and it needs assessment.

K-cramps

Severe abdominal pain associated with heavy use, often described as extreme. Warrants medical assessment rather than home management.

What is actually risky

Which symptoms mean see somebody

Ketamine withdrawal will not kill you. Two things associated with it can cause serious harm, and both are frequently missed.

Depression after stopping. It can be severe, and it is worse in people who were using ketamine to manage an existing mood disorder. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, that is a medical situation and it needs a clinician now, not next week. When substance use is primary and depression also needs treatment, dual diagnosis care can address both.

Urinary symptoms. Pain, urgency or blood in the urine after chronic use points to bladder damage rather than an infection. Repeated courses of antibiotics for what is assumed to be a UTI will not help. Caught early, it frequently improves once ketamine use stops; left alone, the damage can become permanent.

Everything else is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Supervision helps mainly because the psychological phase is where most people go back.

Getting help

You do not have to do the hard weeks alone

The physical part of ketamine withdrawal is over in about a week. The part that sends people back runs for a month or more after that, and it is the part almost nobody plans for.

Common questions

Ketamine withdrawal, answered

What are the symptoms of ketamine withdrawal?

Predominantly psychological: intense cravings, low mood, anxiety, irritability, exhaustion and disrupted sleep. Physical symptoms are milder and can include tremors, sweating, appetite loss and a raised heart rate. There is no seizure risk.

How long does ketamine withdrawal last?

Acute symptoms usually settle within seven to ten days. Cravings, anhedonia and poor concentration commonly persist for several weeks, sometimes two to three months in heavy long-term users.

Does ketamine cause physical dependence?

Ketamine produces marked tolerance and psychological dependence. It does not produce the classic physical dependence syndrome seen with opioids, alcohol or benzodiazepines — which is why withdrawal is uncomfortable rather than medically dangerous.

Can ketamine withdrawal cause depression?

Yes, and it can be severe. This is the main clinical risk of stopping and the reason mood should be monitored rather than left to resolve on its own — particularly for people who began using ketamine because they were already depressed.

Why do I have bladder pain after stopping ketamine?

Chronic ketamine use can cause ketamine-induced uropathy, inflammation and scarring of the bladder wall. Symptoms may persist after stopping but frequently improve over months once use ends. Persistent urinary symptoms warrant urological assessment.

Is ketamine withdrawal worse than the depression it was treating?

For some people the period after stopping feels worse than before starting, particularly where ketamine was self-medicating an underlying condition. That is a strong argument for stopping under clinical supervision rather than alone.
